Here at No Labels, we want Congress to do their job. It’s hard to do when you are worried about your safety and that of your family.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger recently told CBS News that both Republicans and Democrats have received a “wide range of threats and concerning statements that are sent through the mail, email, telephone, social media, and the internet” and “This is the trend that we’re seeing. These people are getting threatened in their homes, their families are being threatened.”

Every year, the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) conducts a threat assessment. In 2024, the USCP’s Threat Assessment Section (TAS) investigated a whopping 9,474 concerning statements and direct threats against the Members of Congress, including their families and staff. This is twice as many in 2017.

A former member of President Trump’s first administration told Vanity Fair’s Gabriel Sherman: “They’re (members of Congress) scared shitless about death threats and Gestapo-like stuff.”

Recently, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s three planned book tour events were abruptly postponed Monday morning because of “security concerns.”

No Labels Founder and CEO Nancy Jacobson said earlier this week on this issue: “Violence, intimidation, and harassment have no place in our democracy – no matter where they come from.”

No Labels believes in America and our ability to turn this trend around. But we are concerned about an escalating spiral of angry rhetoric and threats that spins entirely out of control. That’s why I will be spending the coming months thinking and writing about the threat of political violence in America and how we can all do more in our own live to take the temperature down.

Then maybe, just maybe, Congress can get back to work.
