How does the middle feel about Donald Trump?

We are now 100 days into President Trump’s second term, and the latest public opinion polls have shown, unsurprisingly, that Democrats are unhappy with the administration while Republicans are thrilled.

But how do self-identified independents – who outnumber both Democrats and Republicans, according to Gallup – feel about President Trump? A recent poll from Washington Post-ABC News paints the picture.

Trump’s Approval Rating by Party

Overall, 42% of registered voters approve of the job President Trump is doing, while 55% disapprove.

Broken down by party:

  • 93% of Democrats disapprove of President Trump.
  • 83% of Republicans approve.

No surprises there. As for independents:

  • 33% of independents approve of the President.
  • 58% of independents disapprove of Trump.

Trump’s Approval Rating on the Issues

Independents’ views on President Trump vary depending on the issue. Immigration is his strong suit, while he tends to do worse on economic issues. Here’s an issue-by-issue breakdown:

Immigration

President Trump’s strongest issue, according to the polls.

  • 42% of independents approve of President Trump’s immigration record.
  • 56% of independents disapprove of how Trump is handling immigration.

The Economy

The most important issue to voters in the 2024 election.

  • 33% of independents approve of President Trump’s job on the economy.
  • 66% of independents disapprove of Trump’s economic record.

Tariffs

The issue dominating the headlines of President Trump’s first 100 days; and President Trump’s weakest issue, according to voters.

  • 28% of independents support President Trump’s tariffs.
  • 70% of independents disapprove of the tariffs.

Who Can They Trust?

While independents are mostly unhappy with President Trump’s first 100 days, they don’t see much better options out there.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll asked respondents, “Who do you trust to do a better job handling the country’s main problems – Trump or the Democrats in Congress?”

  • 28% of independents said they trust President Trump more.
  • 19% of independents said they prefer Congressional Democrats.
  • 47% of independents went with “Neither.”

 The Bottom Line

100 days into President Trump’s term, the middle is still up for grabs.
