America’s growing national debt is a five-alarm fire signaling our nation is becoming ungovernable.

Think about the repeated government shutdowns and budget standoffs that are now so common in Washington, and ask yourself:

Do you see any evidence that our leaders are prepared to make the hard decisions required to avert a future debt crisis?

We certainly do not, and that is why No Labels began work late last year on Nightmare on Main Street, which describes an all-encompassing debt crisis that hits the U.S. in 2029 and triggers a social and political breakdown touching every facet of American life.

Although this is a fictional account, it is unfortunately not far-fetched. No Labels spent months speaking with former Treasury and Federal Reserve officials, economists, and investors, and researching previous financial crises. The crisis described in Nightmare on Main Street could realistically happen if America continues its current path. This is the first in a series of policy documents that No Labels will release about America's most pressing challenges.

The purpose of Nightmare on Main Street is to help wake up the public and a leadership class that acts as if our country can indefinitely run astronomical deficits without consequence. To that end, No Labels has also been hosting private, off-the-record meetings with our congressional allies to build agreement on the seriousness of this problem and the trust required to head off or respond to a debt crisis.
