Civics 250: Reigniting Civics Learning for America's Next Generation

Civics 250 is a national civics education initiative for grades 6 through 12, built on the legacy of Senator Joe Lieberman, co-founder and former national chairman of No Labels. Developed by the Hidden Light Institute in partnership with YU Global at Yeshiva University, the program uses Senator Lieberman's four decades of public service as a lens for teaching constitutional principles, civil discourse, and the responsibilities of citizenship.

American democracy depends on informed and engaged citizens. Yet civics education has been deprioritized in schools across the country, and the consequences are now visible in our public life. Only a fraction of American students can demonstrate basic proficiency in civics. Many graduate from high school with a limited understanding of the Constitution, the functions of government, and what citizenship actually requires of them.

At the same time, rising polarization and the erosion of civil discourse have created an environment that discourages many young people from engaging in civic life at all. The problem runs deeper than any single election cycle or policy debate. A generation of Americans is growing up without the knowledge they need to sustain the system they will inherit.

Civics 250 addresses this directly. The curriculum is anchored by the documentary Centered: Joe Lieberman, which uses key moments from Senator Lieberman's career to illustrate how democratic principles work in practice. From his service as Connecticut's Attorney General and State Senator to his tenure in the United States Senate and his historic nomination as the first Jewish American on a major party ticket, Lieberman's life offers something rare in today's political landscape: a sustained example of bipartisan leadership, moral seriousness, and a belief that public service is a calling, not a performance.

Civics250.org provides educators with the opportunity to:
    • Explore the curriculum modules
    • View film clips from Centered: Joe Lieberman
    • Access teacher guides and implementation resources
    • Learn more about the program and how it can be used in the classroom

No Labels is proud to support this initiative. Senator Lieberman embodied the values at the core of our organization: that responsible leaders work across partisan lines, that serious governing matters more than political theater, and that an informed citizenry is the foundation on which all of it depends. Civics 250 carries that vision into the classroom.
